Hair loss can be divided into disorders in which the hair follicle is normal but the hair growth cycle is abnormal (non-scarring alopecia) and disorders in which the hair follicle is damaged (scarring alopecia). Male and female pattern hair loss (non-scarring) is the most common cause of hair loss in men and women respectively.
The diagnosis of hair loss is usually based on a thorough history and scalp examination. In some patients, selected laboratory tests or punch biopsy may be necessary. At our practice for hair loss treatment in New York City, these tests and diagnoses can be performed after scheduling an appointment.Other disorders include alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, cicatricial alopecia, lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia and traumatic alopecias.
Treatment for alopecia is determined by the type of alopecia and includes topical minoxidil, spironolactone, finasteride, corticosteroids etc. Telogen effluvium is often a self-limited disorder.
Trichologist: A trichologist helps people who have problems with their hair and scalp. Some of these problems include excessive hair loss from the scalp, severe breakage after receiving a chemical service, a bald patch which has suddenly appeared or itching and excessive scaling of the scalp. After your consultation with our board certified dermatologists, we may refer you to a trichologist for maintenance of your hair.
